New Ecological Materials for Sustainable Construction

Published: Monday, 13 June, 2022

Building materials have been evolving and now many of them are ecological materials. What is ecological construction? What are the new innovative materials for Sustainable Construction? From Duinsa we explain it to you!

What is Green Construction?

Green building is one that minimizes emissions of CO2 and other pollutants through the use of natural, recycled and locally sourced materials.

It’s also characterized by the low generation of possible waste during the construction process and also takes into account its useful life, recycling and post-treatment.

Innovative Materials for Sustainable Construction

Thermochromic cement

This type of cement changes color depending on the outside temperature. Thanks to these changes, the temperature of the facade of the house increases or decreases, which helps to have a comfortable room temperature inside.

Self-repairing concrete

The main objective of self-repairing concrete is to put an end to the popular planned obsolescence. It has microcapsules that break apart to repair the concrete when internal cracks occur.

Synthetic roof tiles

These roof tiles are made from fully recycled plastics and limestone, making them a sustainable and much cheaper alternative to traditional roof tiles.

Fiber and composite panels

Fiber and composite panels are made from Kevlar, fiberglass and carbon fiber. This makes them 30% cheaper and stronger than traditional brick partitions.

In addition, it’s a material that helps achieve energy savings of up to 50%, produces 100 times less waste than bricks and is fully recyclable.

Semi-transparent wood

The innovation with respect to this material lies in the creation of semi-transparent wood as a substitute for glass and with the aim of housing solar installations in buildings.

3D printing

This technique, in addition to being fast, facilitates waste reduction, since the printers only use the material determined for the task in question.

Biomaterials can be used for the creation of houses, such as adobe, which is fully recyclable once its useful life is over.

Plasma Rock

Plasma Rock is a material made from recycled waste that achieves fully sustainable construction.

Graphene

It’s an elastic, light and flexible material with high thermal and electrical conductivity that makes it perfect for many uses, such as its use in paints, solar panels or concrete.
