Published: Tuesday, 14 November, 2023

Lime mortars are a combination of one or more binders, in which lime is a constant component, together with aggregates, water, and occasionally, additions or admixtures. These mortars are used in both restoration projects and new construction.

The uses of these mortars are very diverse, and their main applications include:

1. Interior and exterior coatings, plastering and rendering in:

  • Restoration projects due to its high compatibility with traditional systems.
  • New construction to improve habitability conditions.

2. Repair and construction of walls and facades

3. Structural reinforcement and consolidation of elements such as masonry walls, pillars and vaults by low pressure injection.

A variety of finishes are available, including smooth, troweled, burnished or scraped surfaces. Application can be done either manually or by spraying machines.

They also play an important role in repairing and filling joints in brick and natural stone walls, to mention a few applications.

The characterization of these mortars depends on the specific type used, whether it is pure lime mortars or mixed lime and cement mortars.

Recommendations for the application of these mortars:

  • Use the mortar within 30 minutes after its preparation.
  • Avoid application at temperatures below 5ºC or above 30ºC.
  • Do not apply in conditions of risk of frost, heavy rain or strong winds.
  • Moisten abundantly the surface of the wall before the application.
  • Avoid applying on surfaces covered with plaster or paint.
  • Do not add water to the mortar after it has begun to harden, and do not reuse mortar mixtures from previous applications.
  • In the case of thicknesses greater than 1.5 cm, it is advisable to apply the product in two coats.
  • Make sure that the mortar is not stronger than the substrate to which it is applied.
